Bill Advances to Name Road for the Late Jerry A. Stern, Barger Says
June 26, 2025
HARRISBURG – A comprehensive bill that would, in part, name a busy stretch of road for the late Jerry A. Stern passed the House of Representatives this week, according to Rep. Scott Barger (R-Blair/Huntingdon).
Barger championed naming Cove Mountain Road (Pa. Route 164) in Taylor and North Woodbury townships for Stern, who served in the House from 1993 to 2014. The initiative by Barger and Sen. Judy Ward (R-Blair/Fulton/Huntingdon/Juniata/Mifflin) was incorporated in Senate Bill 78.
“I was privileged to call Jerry Stern my mentor. He was a servant leader whose life and work were a testament to faith, integrity and Christian service,” Barger said.
Stern died Dec. 11, 2024, in his Martinsburg home.
Barger and Stern attended Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church together and discussed how to maintain a Christian identity in the world of American politics. Barger recalls Stern telling him to treat people the way Jesus would want you to treat them, especially when you don’t agree with them.
“In my estimation, Jerry did that at home and in the halls of the Pennsylvania Capitol,” Barger said.
Senate Bill 78 was sent to the governor on its way to becoming law. It would establish the Representative Jerry A. Stern Memorial Highway from Cove Mountain Road’s intersection with Frederick Road to its intersection with Agway Road in Blair County.
